There are countless mysterious unexplored places across the India having unknown history. Today, let's explore a ruin fort called Murud-Janjira that is located on an island that is named after by a near village called Murud. The fort is the best place for history buffs and photography.

History of Murud- Janjira Fort 

The history of Murud fort is quite suspected as different people have their own views on its existence and its foundation, still that we have explored for you clears that it was built in the 15th century by Rajaram Patil, who was a tribal chief of the local Mahartha Fisherman. The fort was built to protect the local fishermen from pirates and thieves. It is also said that the ruler from Ahmadnagar Nizam attacked the fort with his soldiers and dangerous weapons and got possession over it. Later on, his successor Burhan khan demolished the original fort and converted it into present fort.

Information about Murud- Janjira Fort

The two names have been given to the fort, first is Murud and the other one is Janjira. Janjira name has been derived from the Arabic word, Jazeera means an Island. On the other hand, Murud is a Marathi word that means habshi or Abyssinian. The whole fort is spread over an area of 22 acres. This oval shape fort has been built on the rock off the Arabian sea that is near to the Murud town port, Being situated in the Arabian sea, it is only accessible by sailboats from rajapuri jetty. The distance from Mumbai to the place is 103 miles (165 Km). Murud-Janjira fort comes under the Raigad district of Maharashtra and is controlled by Siddis, an ethnic group in India.

Kalak Bangadi: It is the 3rd largest cannon in India that is installed at Janjira fort, earlier used to discontinue the invaders.  The fort has 21 rounded bastions from where many cannons were fixed to fire on enemies. Kalak Bangadi is made of mixture of 5 different metals that never heats up whatever the temperature is outside.

Pond at Janjira fort: There is an exquisite pond inside the fort that catches millions of eyes everyday. Earlier there were two natural fresh water lakes at Janjir fort that are believed to be 30 feet deep.

Sculpture and Janjira Ruins: The whole is notable for its ruins and sculpture which have deep meaning in itself and people from far flung come to see it. The ruins at the fort tells that story of its hay day. On outer wall of there is a sculpture of tiger and elephants. Moreover, every major gates of the fort has Ashok Chakras engraved over them.

Palace of Nawab: It is only palace at the fort that is still on its good shape. It has numerous secret gates to hide and escape from the enemies.

How to Reach Murud-Janjira Fort

Air
The nearest airport from to Murud-Janhira Fort is Chhatrapati shivaji international airport, Mumbai from where tourist can get public transport or private cab directly to the fort. The airport is situated at a distance of around 165kms from the fort.
By Train
If you prefer the train then the nearest rail head to Murud-Janjira is Panvel railway station that is further connected to many rail heads of popular cities across the Maharashrta. One can get an auto or a public transport to reach Murud-Janjira.
By Road
The fort is well connected to the nearby towns and Mumbai city by road. Buses to and from Mumbai central are available on daily basis.
