Agra is one of the oldest cities in India, once served as the capital of Hindustan. It is located on the banks of river Yamuna, the largest tributary river of the Ganges. Agra falls in the region of Uttar Pradesh, a state in India. It is located at the distance of 363 kilometers from the state capital Lucknow, and an approximately 200 km from national capital Delhi. Today, Agra is served as one of the most visited historical places in India visited by millions of people around the world.

History of Agra

Agra's history is as long as the history of India. The city is also mentioned in the epic Mahabharata, the most important Sanskrit epic of ancient India. The place is documented with Mughal Empire, Agra served as capital of Mughals. Sultan Sikandar Lodhi, the ruler of Delhi founded this city with the coming of 1526. Later on, Bābar ruled this place after winning the First battle of Panipat in 1526. Agra tasted its golden period after the establishment of Mughal Empire under the emperors like Akbar, Jahangir and Shahjahn.  With the coming of 18^th century, the Mughal Empire started falling, and the place came under the possession of Marathas, and later on under the British Raj.

Places to visit in Agra

Taj Mahal: The monument of true Love, It is one of the most beautiful men made building in the world. Taj Mahal is one of the New Seven Wonders of the world, also the world heritage site. This monument is among the strongest historical places in the world built by the great emperor Shah Jahan to her beloved wife Mumtaj, also known as Mumtaj Mahal. The building took almost 22 years to be completed (1630–1652). Twenty thousand workers, masons were employed to put together it; Taj Mahal is built on banks of river Yamuna.

Agra Fort: It is also referred to as ‘Red Fort’.  The fort was built by Great Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1565, the fort is made of red sandstone. It houses a pearl mosque, Jahangiri Mahal, Diwan-i-Am , Anguri Bagh , Mina Masjid , Musamman Burj , Naubat Khana, Shah Jahani Mahal , Shahi Burj  etc. The whole palace is spread over an area of 94 acres, and is best example of Mughal architecture.

Fatehpur Sikri: It is another monument built by Mughals, located at the distance of 35 kilometers form Agra. Being listed on World Heritage, the place makes you familiar with the beautiful architecture of Mughal period in India.

Miscellaneous Agra: Agra is city of beautiful and ancient monuments there many places around the city which are once should be visited at least. Among them few are Guru ka Tal, Mankameshwar Temple, Swāmī Bāgh Samādhi, Jamā Masjid, Rām Bāgh, Mehtāb Bāgh, Keetham Lake, Mughal Heritage Walk etc.
